World Back-Up Day

28 March 2018

31st March is World Back-Up Day, a day aimed at reminding and encouraging us all to back-up our data on a regular basis. Losing files and data is more common than you might think – 1 in 10 computers are infected with a virus each month and 30% of people have never backed up.

So, how should you back up?

We recommend using the 3-2-1 rule:

3 2 1 World Back-Up Day

  • Have at least 3 copies of your data;
  • Keep these backups on 2 different types of media, and;
  • Store at least 1 of these backups offsite.

3 - By 3 copies, this means the original data plus two backups. Whilst one backup is better than none, it won’t be good enough if your only backup is corrupted or list.

2 - It is always recommended that you keep backups on different media. Whether this is to a hard disk, tape, or even DVD, you need to ensure that your backups don’t exist on the same device.

1 - If your server dies and your first backup is lost, having a backup offsite is a great way to ensure recovery in the event of a major disaster.

Additionally, as part of the new General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) coming into force in May, data should be “processed in a manner that ensures appropriate security of the personal data, including protection against unauthorised or unlawful processing and against accidental loss, destruction or damage, using appropriate technical or organisational measures”. This means that there is a responsibility of the data owner to ensure that in the event of the live data being destroyed, a recent backup can be used to repopulate the system.

What can you do?

Speak to your IT department about this to ensure that they have regular backups of your data. If you don’t have any internal IT, Retain International can provide advice on how to do this via a technical consultation. Speak to your account manager today to arrange this – email Sales@retaininternational.com or call 0207 538 4774.
