Retain Database File (.rdb)

This is the Retain database configuration file. This is the file which stores configuration information about the Retain database such as the aliases for its field names, the colours assigned to its priorities and various special settings such as the way in which Retain displays drop downs in the booking dialog. It also stores the location of your data. An .rdb file is associated with a particular database - a set of .dbf files in the case of the Standard edition, .nsf files in the Notes edition, and an Access, SQL Server or Oracle database in the case of DBI or the Client-Server edition. The Enterprise edition does not use .rdb files. When you create or open a notebook in Retain, that notebook is associated with a specific .rdb file. Many notebooks may be associated with the same .rdb file, however one notebook file can only be associated with one .rdb file at any one time.

It is very important to distinguish between the .rdb file and the data itself. The .rdb file does not store your data - all it stores is configuration information about your data.

Retain Notebook File (.rtn)

This file is what you create when you run Retain itself. At its simplest, an .rtn file is simply a view onto your data. It is very important to distinguish between the notebook file and the data itself. The notebook file does not store your data - all it stores is the way in which you view your data. So, for instance, it may store your preferred date range, or the reports you most regularly run against your data.

DBI

This stands for DataBase Independent version, and is an edition of Retain designed to support implementation on client/server databases, such as SQL Server or Oracle, as well as Microsoft Access 97 and the Microsoft Database Engine and other databases with an ODBC interface.

BDE

This is a connectivity standard which can be used by the Retain DBI edition. Versions of the DBI edition which are built to connect using the BDE will have executables named rrpDBI.exe.

ADO

This is a connectivity standard which can be used by the Retain DBI edition. Versions of the DBI edition which are built to connect using ADO will have executables named rrpADO.exe.
